The role of a pharmacist in counselling on over-the-counter medications for the care of skin wounds is important not only with respect
to the number of products available, but also in terms of possible detection of serious skin problems cared for by specialists in the fields
of dermatology, surgery, and vascular medicine. Such wounds particularly include a suspected leg ulcer (ulcus cruris). In the case of nonsevere
wounds, self-treatment in the home setting using available therapeutic and protective products is a very frequent reason to visit
pharmacy. Subsequent care of scars following wound healing is also mostly in the hands of the patient.
