Scabies is widespread across the world and affects all age groups. Cases of scabies may occur sporadically or in clusters, even leading to epidemics, especially in schools, hospitals, various types of residential care facilities, hostels, and prisons. Staff members of these institutions, particularly those providing nursing or caregiving services, are also at increased risk of infection. Family members of clients and staff are likewise more vulnerable. According to the 2017 European recommendation, basic scabies therapy includes the application of 5% permethrin cream, or oral administration of ivermectin, or the use of 25% benzyl benzoate lotion. Alternatively, 0,5% aqueous malathion cream, 1% ivermectin lotion, or 6-33% sulphur cream, ointment, or lotion may be applied. The aim of this article is to summarize the basic facts, highlight the current situation, and stimulate discussion on the therapeutic options for scabies in the Czech Republic.
