Allergic contact dermatitis and irritant contact dermatitis, collectively referred to as contact dermatitis, are some of the most common diagnoses in dermatological outpatient clinics. These are diseases caused by external substances that come into contact with the skin and, by a different mechanism, cause non-infectious inflammation of the skin. Nevertheless, their clinical picture is very similar and indistinguishable. In terms of professionalism, contact dermatitis is the most common occupational skin disease. The role of the dermatologist is associated not only with responsibility in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, but also in the identification of contact with the harmful substance. Rigorous, sometimes even detective work in taking a history, monitoring the course of the disease and epicutaneous tests are therefore an integral part of any investigation of these diseases.
